Full Job Description

Parks Canada – Lake Louise, Yoho & Kootenay Field Unit and Banff Field Unit – Visitor Experience
Field (B.C.), Yoho National Park or Banff (A.B), Banff National Park
Student positions – From approx. May to early September, 2023. The length of contract will be dependent on the selected candidate.
$19.48 to $25.52 per hourClosing date: 1 March 2023 – 23:59, Pacific Time

Duties

Regular tasks include:

  • Work in a small team of two people, and with your supervisor, to plan your schedule and tasks;
  • Participate in various trainings to develop knowledge of the tools and systems to collect data;
  • Collect data using various tools;
  • Upload and sync data from the various tools daily;
  • Troubleshoot issues with tools and/or maintain tools;
  • Provide regular feedback on your work to your supervisor – raising issues as they happen; and,
  • Finish your summer by submitting a detailed report (using Microsoft Excel, Word and/or PowerPoint) to your supervisor.

Work environment

As a Student – Trail and Visitor Use Data Collection with the Visitor Experience team, you will be responsible for collecting and reviewing high-quality, detailed and consistent data over the summer. You will hike on trails and collect data, download and clean-up data, and troubleshoot equipment as required. All training on equipment, software and systems will be provided. The data you gather will be used for future planning and strategic processes to improve the visitor experience in Banff, Kootenay and Yoho national parks.

Intent of the process

The results of this process will be used to fill student positions for the Summer of 2023 in Banff, Kootenay and Yoho national parks, and may be used to fill similar student positions in the future.

Education
Successful completion of high school or approved alternatives, or are currently enrolled in a post-secondary program.

Degree equivalency

Experience

  • Experience conducting field work/and or working outdoors
  • Experience working in MS Word and Excel

  • Ability to effectively communicate over the phone and by email
  • Ability to be self-motivated and implement work independently

Operational Requirements

  • Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment
  • Willing and able to work and /or travel in varied terrains, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation

Conditions of employment

  • Obtain and maintain Reliability Status security clearance
  • Possession of a valid class 5 Driver’s License
  • Proof of student status (will be required during the hiring process)
